Alumni Spotlight

Aaron started taking upper level courses in Criminal Law at Broward College as an 11th grade student at South Broward High School (SBHS). At SBHS, he excelled academically while being actively involved in many groups, clubs and honor societies all of which benefited from his restless drive for learning and social justice engagement. The Black Student Union (which he himself founded “to educate on the trauma of marginalized, black communities, promote black excellence, and inspire the elevation of black culture)”, Model United Nations, National Spanish Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, these are but a few of the extracurricular areas at SBHS where he immersed himself passionately and honed his leadership skills. Outside of school, he volunteered with non-profit health and advocacy groups such as the Health Information Project, Harvest Drive, and the NAACP. Aaron graduated from SBHS with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude, in June 2021, and is currently a rising sophomore at Vanderbilt University pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a Double Major in Human Organizational Development and Forensic Anthropology. This summer, Aaron has secured a prestigious Southern Scholarship Foundation Communication Strategy Externship at PwC (an international professional services network). He will have the opportunity to work on real organizational challenges faced by PwC's partner nonprofit organizations by providing actionable insights and proposing thoughtful strategic solutions. Highly motivated and driven to excel in everything he participates in, he proudly credits Broward College as part of his journey: “I’m a former Broward College Dual Enrollment Student and I want to thank you guys for getting me to where I am now. Vanderbilt wasn’t achievable without you all.”

Undergraduate

Yale University

Alumni Spotlight

A former dual enrollment student at Broward College, Joanna Ruiz has long been passionate about music and the power of advocacy. She is currently an undergraduate at Yale University pursuing a double major in American Studies and Music. Her love for music grew during her time as a saxophone and oboe player for South Broward High School's marching, jazz, and concert band where she came to realize that “music—and art as a whole—can be a powerful tool for inspiring change and creating safe spaces for children and adults alike. Music has the power to reach hearts and souls beyond geographical limitations, and thus, it can be used and should be used as a platform for good.” Complementing her artistic passions, Joanna has been an active champion for uplifting families and communities like her own, something that she believes is rooted in “growing up as a first-generation, low-income student.” Over the years she has worked and volunteered with nonprofits, political/advocacy groups, and school clubs and societies where she gained invaluable leadership experience. Joanna aspires to work with music and art nonprofits and also wants to explore a career in music publishing, music supervision, or audio engineering. About her time at Broward College, Joanna says “As a first-generation college student, the thought of taking college courses was always very intimidating. Being able to take them in my community while in high school with students who share this same experience gave me the confidence I needed to thrive in university and beyond!" In addition to her studies at Yale University, Joanna is an intern with the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood.
